Dear Angel Nation,
Yesterday we received the news that this poor over-bred German Shepherd was giving birth at a rural animal shelter. Although a dog’s instincts tell them to hide and find safety to deliver their babies, a mother in an animal shelter has no options. She is forced to give birth in a concrete room with dozens of other animals just inches away. Giving birth in a shelter, surrounded by other dogs, noise, and disease goes against everything in a mother’s nature. Her desire is to find safety and peace and protect her innocent newborns. The despair and helplessness that these poor mothers feel tear at our souls. Their faces tell their story and their pleas are impossible to ignore
The summer months are brutal: puppies are being born faster than rescues can act, fosters and adopters are leaving town for vacation, donations are down, and dogs are being dropped at shelters at an alarming pace. This mother was forced into labor in an overcrowded facility and though we have nowhere for her to go, we did not turn our backs. Today we got a plea for this gorgeous yellow lab and her seven puppies who were dumped at animal control. With the holiday coming, and shelters needing space to make room for more, we immediately dispatched transport to get them. We have no choice but to help.
This will be the fifth large family of mom and young puppies that we have rescued in just over a week. Each family requires a foster home to live in and funding for vetting of each family member. We cover vetting through adoption and spay and neuter surgeries when puppies are old enough. Mamas will be spayed when they are ready after weaning their babies and will be available for adoption after all other health issues, such as heartworms, are resolved.
